INSTILLING EXERCISE AS A LIFESTYLE
As a young child growing up in the 70’s, my parents went for their daily walks and practiced Tai Chi. As long as I can remember, they always encouraged us to go out and play. My neighbors and I played outdoors everyday until our Moms would call us for dinner. We would invent games, go for bicycle rides, play kick the can, and hide and seek. We were also encouraged to take lessons, and participate in school teams that peeked our interests. In elementary school, I was in the soccer, and track and field team. I was a good sprinter, and high jumper, but mediocre with soccer. Nonetheless, the experience of working in a team was empowering. As a teenager, my siblings and I continued to be active. I was into individual sports such as running and weight training, my sister Flora joined the volleyball team and played tennis, and my brother Winston was in the basketball team, and played numerous sports.
Health and Fitness has become part of our lifestyle growing up. Thanks to Mom and Dad for instilling this healthy habit, and being such great role models. Many years later, I still feel that exercising will always be part of my life just like the way I eat, hydrate, and rest on a daily basis. These are just some of the reasons why I became a personal trainer, and feel it is important to help reinforce fitness to children starting at a young age.
I would like to share some yoga poses that you can try at home with your children as a way to reinforce healthy living. Yoga is one form of exercise that promotes problem solving, cooperation, and team work. My students always have a joyful time working with classmates. I especially enjoy hearing the laughter and giggles as they try to figure out how to get into position. When they do, you should see the proud expression on their little faces. Just PRICELESS!
Have fun!! Please let us know which one is your child’s favorite pose.
